Includes about 81 species of insectivorous bats with wide distribution in Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania. They have short muzzle and complex noseleaf that bears a horizontal horseshoe surrounding the nostrils, often thrown into skin folds and associated leaflets. Intermediate leaf may or may not be clearly differentiated. Posterior leaf simple to complex. Sella and connecting process absent.


The tail is well-developed and is entirely enclosed in the interfemoral membrane.


Other characters vary at the generic level.


As of yet, sixteen species belonging to four genera have been reported from South Asia.
