Hipposideros diadema nicobarensis (Dobson, 1871)
This large-sized leaf-nosed bat of South Asia is characterized by moderate sized ears, that are broad at the base and have acutely pointed tips. A long tail completely enclosed in the interfemoral membrane except for the extreme tip. The forearm length averages 62.2 mm (58.8 - 64.2 mm). The noseleaf is simple with four pairs of supplementary leaflets, the fourth is small, may be rudimentary and sometimes absent. The noseleaf characteristically pale coloured. Tragus absent, anti-tragus well defined. Wings and interfemoral membranes are naked and uniform pale brown. Pelage is very soft, dense and of medium length. Dorsal surface is pale brown to dark brown with shoulders and flanks characteristically coloured with patches of cream coloured hair. Face and ventral surface pale to cream colour.
This species can be separated from similar looking H. larvatus 1. basing on flesh coloured to pale nose leaf, and 2. characteristic white patches of fur on shoulders and flanks.
A rare species of South Asia found in tropical evergreen to semi-evergreen forests of Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago. Roosts singly in caves with high roofs. Nothing is known about the species in India.
