The Chiropteran Library of South Asia

Pteropodidae includes about 186 species of bats that feed chiefly on fruits, leaves, flowers and flower products. They are distributed in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania.

Pteropodids are characterized by their strong muzzles and jaws. They do not possess a noseleaf or a tragus. The eyes are large and they possess a keen sense of smell, to compensate for the absence of true echolocation. Their ears are simple and usually blunt. The tail is small or absent, and the proximal part of the

caudal vertebrae included in the interfemoral membrane, while the distal ones are free.

As of yet, thirteen species belonging to eight genera have been reported from South Asia.
